You will certainly find them in some of my stories, including “Complete Log of Week 893819 – Dana’s Story”. But this one has a twist. The original spark for this story came from the merge of two core, loose ideas: one was a bunch of children waking up in an orphanage with no idea of who they were and where they came from; the other was a broken generational spaceship that sent its parts away from tragedy to save its dormant population. It takes a while to solve the puzzle in the story, and you have to go along with Dana as she finds the clues to something that she doesn’t understand. Dana never really grasps where they are going, but finding out more about herself, her peers, and her “caregiver” gives her a sense of purpose, meaning that now she has a destination to aim for.

Another theme that I wanted to bring up in this piece was our capacity and desire to tell stories. Whoever we are, telling stories is an intrinsic part of the human experience, whether we tell them to others or to ourselves, and that’s mainly what helps build Dana’s character. Without her story, her adoption myth, she feels incomplete.

And there’s both hope and darkness in this piece. Even if those children reach their destination, there are a ton of unsaid things that might go wrong. They’re traveling on the hull of a destroyed spaceship, fed on soups given by an AI system. Whatever they find in their future, they’ll have a lot to deal with.

Some trivia:

– “LAIR” has this name because it lives inside the children and the ship, but also in their physical home. It’s never said in the story, but LAIR means Local Artificial Intelligence for Reproduction. Besides, it contains “AI” in it.

– The story has a list of 13 foreshadow devices that can make the reader realize they’re in a generational spaceship. You can try to find them all out 🙂

– In case you haven’t noticed it, every child in the story has a four-letter name: Dana, Lika, Wewe, Popo, and so on. LAIR isn’t particularly creative when naming children.

~~~
Thanks to the author for joining us!
